Introduction to the Internet Industry

Demographics of Internet Users - There are an estimated 23.5 million people on the Internet.

Most of the Internet users are from the United States; 76.2% were from the US, 10.2% from Canada and Mexico, and 8.4% from Europe.

Internet Users are affluent. The estimated average income of $63,000 places Internet users in the higher level income brackets.

The occupational area of Internet users is diversified, divided equally between computer, educational, and professional/managerial fields. The computer field accounted for 29.1%, educational for 30.7%, and professional/managerial for 30.1%. (*1)

Market Growth - During the last seven years, the size of the Internet has grown at a phenomenal rate. From July 1989-92, the Internet grew at an average annual rate of 332%. From July 1993-96, the average annual growth rate was 208%. (*2)

Future Prospects - The commercial role of the Internet will continue to grow in importance; sales from the World Wide Web are predicted to outpace the growth of the Internet. According to a market survery performed by ActivMedia (*3), the estimated volume of sales generated by the World Wide Web will grow from $436 million in 1995 to $46 billion in 1998, an average annual growth rate of 348%. The growth of the Internet, itself, is not the sole factor in the commercialization of the Internet. The improvement and wider use of encryption programs allowing secure monetary transactions will decidedly influence sales.
